Poodles require regular grooming.
Hint: Remember that when you get a poodle it needs regular grooming. You can learn to groom yourself. Consider the monthly cost of a professional groomer prior to getting a poodle - make sure it fits your budget.
When should my poodle puppy get it's first haircut?
Everyone loves a fuzzy puppy but it is important to take your puppy to the groomer so they get used to the process. Don't wait until your puppy is 6 months old for its first haircut. A puppy should have had at least one haircut prior to you picking it up. Plan on regular grooming every 4-6 weeks throughout it's life (depending on the hairstyle and your ability to brush your dog regularly). If you like the fuzzy look get your puppy bathed and a minimal trim, face scissored around the eyes, bottoms of the feet trimmed (so the puppy has good traction and can walk well) and don't forget the sanitary areas. Do your pup a favor and get them accustomed to the process early, your pup will thank you and so will your groomer.
What is a Puppy Clip?
The traditional pet puppy clip is a trimmed face, neck, feet and the base of the tail. The body is lightly scissored to give it shape and balance. Some owners prefer a teddy bear style head.
The AKC show puppy clip: "A Poodle under a year old may be shown in the "Puppy" clip with the coat long. The face, throat, feet and base of the tail are shaved. The entire shaven foot is visible. There is a pompom on the end of the tail. In order to give a neat appearance and a smooth unbroken line, shaping of the coat is permissible."
Head styles

Corded Poodles
Johnny is shown in a corded continental clip. Corded hair dates back to the earliest poodles. The hair itself is not different from any other poodle, the hair is trained to hang in tight even cords of varying lengths.
Hint: Corded hair is trained to hang in tight coils and requires a knowledgeable groomer. Leaving your dog unbrushed to mat will not result in corded hair. The coat below took 4 years of careful training to grow in this style.
