Poodles are a companion dog that excel in a wide range of activities. Poodles can be the perfect lap dog; excellent companions; and perform well in obedience, agility, the show ring, and as retrievers. There are poodles that perform many service jobs, from search and rescue work to guide dogs.

The AKC recognizes poodles in three sizes: toy, minature, and standard. Some countries recognize a fourth poodle size, the klein or moyen poodle.
Terms such as royal, teacup, and tiny toy are terms that describe a poodle that falls into one of the three sizes. Some breeders use these terms as a description, others use them in misleading ways in order to demand a higher price for their puppies.  Please see the pages dedicated to each of the sizes.

Hint - Not looking to buy a show dog? You still want a dog that is bred to the standard. This will help your puppy mature into a happy, healthy dog. Poodles with poor structure are at higher risk for developing hip, back, and muscle injuries.

As in any breed or mixed breed dog there are health issues poodle owners need to be aware of.
