Poodle Puppy Buyers Guide

What you need to ask yourself before you buy a poodle puppy.

Answer these questions:

1. Do you have time to devote to training, socializing and housbreaking  a puppy?

  • If not consider an older trained dog.

2. Do you want an intelligent dog that needs mental stimulation?

  • Train your poodle to do tricks.
  • Obedience train your poodle.
  • Take your poodle to new places.
  • Go for a walk.
  • Play with your poodle.
  • All of the above.

3. Is a small, medium or large dog the best size for your family and living situation?

  • Toy poodles are cute, need less space to exercise, and may be easier to travel with.
  • Toy poodles are not the best choice for young children, they are more easily injured.
  • Miniature poodles can do everything a standard poodle can in a smaller package.
  • Standard poodles are more rough and tumble, their size may provide added security, they are a good choice for families with children.

4. Do you want a dog that has minimal shedding, and requires regular grooming?

  • Can you afford to have a poodle groomed every 4-6 weeks? Check with your local groomer to determine the cost.  The size of your poodle and the condition of its coat will influence cost.
  • If you want to groom your poodle yourself find someone who will be available to teach you. Grooming a wiggling puppy can be a challenge.
  • Poodles need to be brushed several times a week to be kept mat and tangle free.
  • Waiting 4 weeks for the groomer to brush your dog usually means mats will develop. Pulling out mats may hurt, be kind to your poodle and brush it at home.
