Rally is a new dog sport that is enjoyed by the young and old alike! A rally course consist of 10 - 20 stations, depending on the level. The dog and handler move together (dog at the handlers left side) at their own pace through the series of stations, at each station the dog performanes an exercise such as sit, change of speed, or down.
The course is marked by rally signs for the handler to read. Signs are numbered so the handler know which order to proceed in. Rally was originally designed for dogs with basic manners, to produce dogs that behave well at home, in new places and around other dogs.
At the novice level the dog is on a loose leash, at higher levels the dog works off leash. Perfect heel position is not required. Communication between the handler and dog is encouraged. At the novice (beginners) level handlers may encourage their dogs verbally by praise, patting their leg, talking to them, and clapping their hands. The handler may not touch the dog or make physical corrections. A loose leash that shows the dog is happily working with you is the goal.
Judging is based on how well the exercises are completed and the team work between the dog and handler.
There are three levels in Rally:
- Novice - dog on leash , 10-15 stations
- Advanced - dog off leash, 12-17 stations
- Excellent - dog off leash 15-20 stations
