Toy Poodles

Toy poodles are the smallest variety of poodles. They are defined by the AKC standard as 10 inches or under. Poodles are measured at the shoulder.

Tiny toy poodles, teacup poodles, pocket poodles, and french poodles are all terms used to describe the toy poodle.

Hint:
Some breeders use these terms to describe the smallest poodles, others use them to charge more money for a puppy. Poodles under 4 pounds may have more health problems than toy poodles over 4 pounds. Ask your veterinarian prior to purchasing one of these puppies. Reputable poodle breeders rarely allow one of these tiny puppies to leave them prior to 12 weeks of age.

Toy poodles are great companion dogs, they love to go with you for a ride, sit in your lap, help you garden, sleep in your bed and sit in your favorite spot to watch T.V.

Toy poodles are not so delicate that they can't enjoy agility, obedience and other events just like the larger sized poodles.

A new toy poodle puppy needs socialization take your puppy with you wherever possible. Out to meet the neighbors, parks, stores that allow dogs.

When should my poodle puppy get it's first haircut?

Everyone loves a fuzzy puppy but it is important to take your puppy to the groomer so they get used to the environment. Don't wait until your puppy is 6 months old for its first haircut. A puppy should have had atleast one haircut prior to you picking it up. Plan on regular grooming every 4-6 weeks throughout it's life (depending on the hairstyle and your ability to brush your dog regularly). If you like the fuzzy look get your puppy bathed and a minimal trim, face scissored around the eyes, bottoms of the feet trimmed (so the puppy has good traction and can walk well) and don't forget the sanitary areas.  Do your pup a favor and get them accustomed to the process early, your pup will thank you and so will your groomer.
